All this while, fans have only known the late Datuk Sudirman Arshad through his songs and whatever background information they’ve read or found online. However, they now have the chance to 'get closer' to Asia’s Number One Entertainer through a special exhibition, Warisan Sudir: Tribute to Asia’s Number One Performer.
The exhibition, organised by Kamura Enterprise in collaboration with Fahrenheit88 and supported by the National Archives of Malaysia (ANM), was recently held at Fahrenheit88 shopping mall in Bukit Bintang in conjunction with the 65th National Day celebration.
Warisan Sudir: Tribute to Asia’s Number One Performer, which was open to the public for free, served as the perfect platform for fans to truly get to know the man behind the voice — the singer who famously beat Hong Kong legend Leslie Cheung and Singaporean superstar Anita Sarawak at the Asian Popular Music Awards held at London’s Royal Albert Hall on 19 March 1989.
The late Sudirman's nephew, Razman Azrai Zainuddin, or Atai, expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in honouring his uncle’s legacy.
"After 30 years, this is the first time an exhibition like this has been held for the fans. Personally, I feel it should have happened a long time ago.
It would have been quite difficult for us to organise such a big exhibition on our own. Besides, doing it individually wouldn’t feel right. As family members, we feel it’s more appropriate for this kind of tribute to come from the fans, while we simply give our support," he said.
Through this exhibition, fans can finally see the precious treasures and personal items of the late Sudirman that have never been shown to the public before.
I believe that if he were still here, this is exactly what he would have wanted — for fans to see his personal collection up close.
Our family is also honoured to share some of his personal belongings for fans to enjoy and appreciate."
"On behalf of the family, I handed over several photos and certificates that belonged to him. There were more than 10 different items altogether," he said.
According to him, the exhibition also featured merchandise produced by Kamura, with 15% of the proceeds being donated to Sudirman’s family to be used for charitable work.
**Kamura’s Chief Executive Officer, Syarifah Aswatul Hasanah, said that they organised this exhibition specially to mark 30 years since Sudirman’s passing.
'We also created official Sudirman merchandise, and part of the profits will be given to his family to support charity work.
Moving forward, we’re planning to set up a permanent Datuk Sudirman gallery in collaboration with his family,' she said.
Popular singer, actor, and comedian Yassin Yahya, who helped drive the exhibition through his company Yasstar Production, expressed his gratitude for being able to bring such a large-scale exhibition to life.
"This is an initial step to serve as a reference for future generations, and we hope to make it an annual event. It’s also my personal contribution, as an artiste, to the late Sudirman," he said.
The Regent of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah , officiated the exhibition.
His Royal Highness was accompanied by the Pahang State Tourism, Culture, Environment, Plantation and Commodities Committee Chairman, Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin; the Director-General of the National Archives of Malaysia, Jaafar Sidek Abdul Rahman; and the Chief Executive Officer of Fahrenheit88, Datuk Joyce Yap.
